In the wild, hamsters hide in their dens, which consist of various chambers. In order to have a suitable hiding place in which the hamster can feel at home when it is kept in a cage, it needs hamster houses.

Its cave serves the wild hamster not only as a place of retreat, but also as a hiding place from predators. On top of that, hamsters that hibernate also retreat into their burrows.

To survive the winter unscathed, the animals create a pantry. In addition, the burrows have a sleeping place, a droppings chamber and - in the case of females - a nesting place where the babies are born and grow up.

This already gives an idea of how important an appropriate hamster house is, even when keeping cages. It serves the animal as a shelter, place of retreat and as protection when it feels attacked.
